Dear Families,

The class has been doing a great job building routines and community for the year. I believe that the beginning of the year should be spent "going slow, to go fast." By taking the time to teach kids how to use time efficiently, we will gain lots of learning and and creative time through the year.

Thank you for returning the One Million Words or Less "homework" assignment. Reading them has been a joyful experience. Thank you for sharing sides of your student that I haven't yet seen and for letting me get to know them better through your eyes. If you haven't turned the homework in yet, it is not too late. I always accept late homework -- this goes for your student's homework too.

On Friday, your student brought home a reading log. On one side they will record their daily reading. On the other side, they will complete a reading response about a book (or part of a book) that they have read. Homework should be returned in the purple folders on Wednesday.

To help you get to know me better:

I am a second generation Taiwanese American who grew up in NJ. I went to college at Princeton for engineering but switched to sociology. After, I taught Kindergarten in Trenton, NJ for two years before moving to Berkeley, CA for graduate school in Ethnic Studies. I was a Teaching Assistant for undergraduate classes and a summer school teacher to upper elementary students. I took a detour from teaching to work for my partner's (Jon's) guitar-building start-up where I did a variety of things including bracing guitar tops, spraying finish and maintaining the company website. This turned into a career as a web programmer for an international musical instrument company which allowed me a flexible schedule to raise my daughters (Archer, in third grade at Abernethy, and River, in 6th grade at Hosford). A few years ago I made the decision to return to the much-more-emotionally-satisfying career of teaching and started the PSU Education program while working as a pre-school teaching assistant during the day. Last year was my first year at Grout, when I taught 4th grade. I am excited about moving to 2nd grade and working with this sweet age group.

Best,
Teacher Karen
